Is PHP Declining In Popularity?

Good Morning! The recent April 2024 edition of the Tiobe index paints a concerning picture for PHP, as the language has dropped to its lowest-ever ranking of 17th place. Also, Android smartphones are poised for significant growth in 2024, outpacing the expansion of Apple's iOS devices by a considerable margin. The Overture Maps Foundation, a group made up of big tech companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom, has announced the beta release of its global open map dataset.

Is PHP Declining In Popularity?

When the Tiobe index started in 2001, PHP was about to become the standard language for building websites. In fact, PHP even reached the top 3 spot in the index, ranking third several times between 2006 and 2010. However, the recent April 2024 edition of the Tiobe index paints a concerning picture for PHP. The language has dropped to its lowest-ever ranking of 17th place.

According to Paul Jansen, CEO of Tiobe Software, this decline can be attributed to the rise of competing web development frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Django, and React. "The major driving languages behind these new frameworks were Ruby, Python, and most notably JavaScript," Jansen noted. On top of this competition, some security issues were also found in PHP, forcing the language to reinvent itself.

While PHP still has a strong presence in the small-to-medium website market and powers the popular WordPress content management system, Jansen believes that "its glory days seem to be over." This shift in language popularity is a reminder of the changing nature of the software development landscape.

Android Expected to Outpace iOS Growth in 2024

According to new projections from research firm IDC, Android smartphones are poised for significant growth in 2024, outpacing the expansion of Apple's iOS devices by a considerable margin. IDC's research director Nabila Popal told CNN that "this year, we are expecting Android to grow at twice the pace of iOS." This forecast comes amidst shifting market dynamics, with Android regaining ground after recent years of iOS encroachment, particularly in international markets.

IDC's comprehensive analysis reveals a 7.8% increase in global smartphone shipments year-over-year for Q1 2024, totaling around 289 million units. This resurgence signals a recovery for the overall smartphone market, bouncing back from two years of macroeconomic challenges.

Key factors driving Android's anticipated rebound include:

  • Diminishing sales for Apple in China

  • Samsung recapturing the top smartphone OEM spot

Meanwhile, Apple faces regulatory hurdles in the US with an antitrust lawsuit targeting its App Store and messaging services.

Overture Maps Foundation Releases Beta of Open Map Dataset

The Overture Maps Foundation, a group made up of big tech companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom, has announced the beta release of its global open map dataset. This dataset is a big step forward in providing developers and mapping services with high-quality, ready-to-use geographical data.

The beta release includes five key data layers:

  • Information on about 54 million places of interest around the world

  • Data on 2.3 billion buildings

  • Detailed information on transportation systems like roads, walking paths, and more

  • Translated data on countries and regions

  • Basic layers for land and water information

Overture has put this dataset together by combining the best available open map data sources, including OpenStreetMap, satellite/aerial images, government data, and open commercial sources. The data has gone through a lot of testing and checks to make sure it is stable and reliable for real-world use.

With this beta, developers can start looking at and using Overture's interoperable data and plan in their mapping products and services. Feedback from the community will help improve the dataset before it is expected to be fully released later this summer. The goal is to deliver a comprehensive, high-quality open map that can power the next generation of location-based innovations.
